I don't know how it is in other families, but at home I'm constantly stumbling upon "nooks." One of my children's favorite activities is building nooks. From blankets, pillows, boxes, and really anything that can be moved, children's kingdoms are built in the most varied and at the same time most impossible places.
They LOVE it!
It's probably from here, from childhood, that the need lives on in us as adults too, to nestle in with a good book, a mug of tea or cocoa.
I once asked my son why he doesn't sleep in his own bed, why it's good for him — literally — to sleep on me, in our bed. The answer was very simple: "Because, Mommy, you're so nice and warm and soft!"
That's it.
This is what we long for when we set up a reading corner. Comfort, warmth, softness, and perhaps as adults, a bit of solitude too…
Because in this rushing world, we so rarely get to stop for an hour or two to turn inward. Yet it doesn't take much — just a few square meters, a few nice soft pillows, preferably as large as possible, light, and of course a little peace.
One obvious solution is to create a space in front of the window for those longing to rest. The sunlight pleasantly warms and relaxes. Of course, it's worth providing an alternative light source. Before we choose the right lamp, let's think about what we'll use the space for. If for reading, definitely opt for a reading lamp; if just for resting and relaxing, mood lighting will suffice. A light source that has both functions would be ideal.
Let's not forget about candles either!
And in winter, bring on the fairy lights!
In England, you'll find in many houses that a bench runs along the area in front of the window, with cushions, blankets, and pillows placed on it. This method not only increases the seating area but also storage space, since the interiors of these pieces of furniture function as cabinets. This is where seasonal items go that are only needed at certain times of the year.
It's not as widespread here at home yet, but the conservatory is an excellent place for a reading corner. The large glass surfaces ensure a pleasant climate all year round.
If possible, it's worth creating such a space in the kitchen or dining area too.
In the morning hours, as the family wakes, the mother is already bustling in the kitchen, the rest of the family members wake one by one, and little tousled children's heads appear in turn — it's nice to snuggle under the blanket for a bit longer and exchange a few words before the day starts.
At family or friend gatherings, the kitchen is always one of the central spots for us. Somehow it attracts people. It might be the delicious aromas, or that something's always happening there, but in the end we find ourselves with everyone sitting here, or those who couldn't find a seat standing with their glass in hand.
In the evening, there's nothing better than when, while cooking, one — or perhaps all — family members surround the host. That's when there's time to tell stories, talk confidentially, and together set the mood for the evening.
Last but not least, here's one of my favorite interior design solutions: a nook under the stairs. At once practical, atmospheric, not too expensive, and yet a striking element of our home.
Now we just need to make very sure of one thing: that we get there first!
